Kids will have fun using their creativity to make a fun placemat to use at dinner time.  You can make limitless placemats by sandwiching almost anything between wax paper.  Here are just some ideas to get you started.

Supplies Needed for Wax Paper Placemat Craft:

  • Wax Paper
  • 2 Large Brown Paper Grocery Bags (for ironing)
  • Iron
  • Scissors
  • Construction Paper, Old Crayons...anything flat that you can sandwich between wax paper

Directions to make a Wax Paper Placemat:

  • Tear off 2 pieces of wax paper to the size you want your placemat
  • Cut open the Brown Paper Grocery Bags so that they lay flat and are bigger than your placemat
  • Lay 1 piece of wax paper on 1 grocery bag
  • Add your decorations on top of the wax paper, making sure to not put any decorations right at the edge
  • Some ideas for decorations:
      • Cut plate, cup, fork, spoon, and knife out of construction paper

      • Trace you child's hands and cut out
      • Use scissors or an old pencil sharpener and make crayon shavings

    • Cut out any shapes from Construction Paper, like Stars, Moons, Circles, Squares (then they can practice their shapes and colors while eating dinner!)
  • After you are done laying out your decorations, place the other piece of Wax Paper over everything, so that you sandwich the decorations in between the two pieces of Wax Paper
  • Place the other Brown Paper Grocery Bag that you cut open on top of the wax paper and use your iron to melt the wax paper together and seal in all your decorations
